Celebrate more than just romantic attraction this Valentine’s

Perhaps the singular beacon of warmth during the cold, dreary month of February is Valentine’s Day. The boxes covered in pink paper mache, foil-wrapped Dove chocolates, and sparkly cards are undoubtedly appealing. However, as heart-shaped products start to line the shelves, the single people of the world are filled with trepidation at the thought of enduring another V-Day without a romantic partner.

A Hallmark money heist, the reason why so many people are born in November, a day designed to bash single people, it’s easy to admit the holiday elicits a range of emotions. Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day has become an unavoidable fixture of American culture. Luckily, regardless of if you have a significant other, there are many productive ways to spend the 14th of February.

For a holiday imbued with romantic love, many Valentine’s Day traditions lend themselves to platonic relationships. We fondly remember the day stuffing candy into others’ crepe-papered boxes as elementary schoolers; who’s to say we grow out of this with adolescence? No semi-frivolous holiday such as Valentine’s Day is or was ever applicable to only a particular group of people.

Consider showing your appreciation for your closest friends by writing a thoughtful card or gifting some sweet treats. V-Day can be an opportunity to reflect on current relationships and acknowledge the bonds that have emotionally kept us together over the past year.

Instead of going out for an expensive dinner, have a socially-distanced movie gathering. Get together with your friends (or significant other), snuggle up with blankets, and watch the films of your choice. Don’t feel limited just to just rom-coms. But if you want to pursue that traditional route, Crazy, Stupid Love is always a winner. Netflix Party and other stream-sharing services are always a safer alternative for movie-viewing together in a socially distant fashion.

While it may be insignificant to some, Valentine’s Day can be difficult to endure for many. Some individuals thrive in their singlehood, blasting Beyoncé from their car speakers. Others may be feeling the loss of a relationship. It’s imperative to be sensitive regardless of your personal relationship status.

Most importantly, there is no shame in not having a romantic partner or love interest. We have been conditioned to believe that finding a husband, wife, or partner is a defining step of adulthood and something that must be pursued. Love isn’t one size fits all. Know that there is love in the most unexpected places: in the laughter you share with your closest friend, in the sometimes awkward hugs you receive from your great aunt, and perhaps in a smile at a stranger. Don’t begrudge others of their love, wherever it comes from. And remember that everyone is deserving of compassion and chocolate, whether it’s Valentine’s Day or not.
